Yesterday was my birthday! My boys (all three of them, including my husband) took me out for an early breakfast at a great little café, where we ate so much bread, fancy cheeses, and tapenades that I won’t be craving bread anytime soon—yeesh! Then later in the afternoon, we went to a park by the beach and had the best time playing and picnicking in the grass. It was one of the best birthdays I’ve ever had—relaxing, low-key, and with people I love, which is just how I like it. I actually cried a few times out of sheer happiness.
Then, when we walked past the Mango Outlet I deflated a bit. Sighing, I said to my husband, “You know, if I wasn’t on a shopping diet, I would treat myself to something nice for my birthday.” He enthusiastically offered to buy something for me, which wouldn’t exactly be against the rules, he said, but it would have felt like cheating. So I said no and puffed myself back up. “I don’t need any of this stuff anyway. Let’s go.”
But I admit that I continued thinking about the prim little topper in the window. These ladylike jackets are my new obsession. I love them with a head-to-toe ladylike look, and I also love them when irreverently paired with leather and ripped jeans. I want to cheat on my shopping diet with one of these beauties!
I know the menswear trend is still hot right now—and believe me, if there was anyone who was all about menswear, it’s me—but suddenly I want to embrace ladylike! And I want to start right here.
