A Second Room & Board Sofa

The first sofa we ever bought was the Mercer sofa from Room & Board in a pale, cool yellow called “celery.” It was 2003 and we were furnishing our first condo. It took a couple of weeks to be able to sit on it completely, as we were so nervous about ruining our expensive, mature purchase.

At some point they discontinued the Mercer sofa, and it was updated to become the Reese sofa. I didn’t like it as much as the Mercer, but it didn’t matter, because we ended up selling everything and moving overseas, so it was unlikely that we would shop at Room & Board ever again.

Except that we came back. We remodeled a house. And after testing many sofas in person, it became obvious to us that we would have to buy a Room & Board sofa again, as it was the most comfortable, high-quality sofa we have ever had.

So… ironically, we just bought the Reese. Sixteen years later. It’s the circle of life.

Today we applied the final coat of finish to our wood floors and added handles to the doors. The house is officially move-in ready!

One of my favorite details in the house: the horizontal lines on the interior doors. They echo the horizontal lines on our front door as well as the customized lines on our windows.

These are from Lynden Door’s Denman line.

Trim is essentially complete, so all of our closet doors arrived just in time.

For the doors, we decided to shop local, and we could not have made a better decision. The salespeople were knowledgeable, helpful, and went out of their way to talk me through the details. It was such a different experience than when we ordered our front door from a big-box store.

Lesson learned. Shop local.

I love the FLOS Smithfield Ceiling Light by Jasper Morrison but can’t afford the $1000 price tag. I found an under-$150 imitation on eBay and I love it. The proportions aren’t as elegant as the FLOS, but the overall effect is pretty close.

First coat of paint in the living room done, in Sherwin-Williams’ Pure White. These are the two closets at the end of the hallway, which I hadn’t photographed until today.
