The Lake House Renovation: Living Room, Day 3

I know I’m posting photos these days without a lot of explanation. It’s time related, of course, and I can’t imagine I’m going to conjure more of it soon; if anything, there will be less of it. That’s the nature of adulting (or so they say).

I will take a moment to say this, though. Of all the rooms in the house, this is the one I am most excited to bring back to life. Perhaps it’s because we left original details, like the brick fireplace, brick accent wall, and original 1959 floors that it feels like those details are finally getting their redemption. I hope we succeed in honoring them.

Also, this room DOES have a gas fireplace. Just sayin’.

Welp. It looks like I’ve missed some days in the living room reno. At some point between then and now, we updated the electrical, blew in insulation, and are now in ceiling mode.

We weren’t really planning to do anything to the living room. There were only three objectives here: turn the firewood storage (the hole to the left of the fireplace) into a useable shelf; get the gas fireplace serviced, and paint the walls.

But, as you can see, the ceiling tiles just came down. (Insert shocked emoji.) Simultaneously, Elmer the expert came over to service the fireplace.

I did not want to replace the ceiling. I was fervently against it, in fact, because I wanted us to save our money for a future vaulted ceiling. But things sometimes go as they go, and in discussions with our contractor, I began to see the wisdom in replacing it. So, we are doing it, and somehow that one act of taking down the old ceiling vastly improved the smell of the house. Go figure. Maybe it was full of rat pee.

Here’s the before photo from the listing:

I should start titling these posts, “Money Pit, Day 1.”
