Fruits in Fashion

Perhaps my favorite thing in the world to eat—even above cheese, dark chocolate, ghormeh sabzi, New York style pizza, cupcakes, and curry—is fruit. I love to eat fruit and try to start every morning with at least four or five different kinds. This morning I had an apple, a pear, a banana, a peach, and a nectarine for breakfast. My three year-old had the same. And my love for fruit has grown exponentially since living on the Mediterranean, since it’s so much juicier and tastier here.

When fashion designers went crazy with fruit prints this spring, I kept thinking that the clothes looked good enough to eat. Yum, and yum.

And it’s not just fashion designers. Fruit prints are popping up everywhere in home accessories. Some are painterly, some whimsical, some graphic—which means that this mouth-watering motif can make its way into any style of décor.

One of my favorite interpretations of this trend is fruit wrapping paper from Happy F&B, a Swedish design agency. One:

Six Months of Color Palettes

I get irrationally excited about Lonny’s regular column on wall paint. Each issue features a color trend prediction or palette suggestion from a paint company, and they’re always so drippingly beautiful and tasty.

Two color palette trends from Farrow & Ball:

Also, if you’re wondering where I’ve been all week… I was catching up on TV shows. It’s true! With such little time to myself each day, sometimes the most passive activity appeals to me most. Like watching American Idol.

White Walls with Black Trim

I keep seeing this. White walls with black lacquered trim may have Art Deco origins, but it’s been popping up on my screen a lot lately—and I can’t complain! It’s so appropriate for this New York City apartment featured in Lonny magazine. I love the black trim and I love the décor. It’s restrained glamour at its absolute best:

Then there’s this Arizona house in the premiere issue of TradHome, which doesn’t exactly have white walls, but the black trim surrounded by white trim gives almost the same effect and allows you to have colored walls.

So I’m making note of this. It’ll work so well in the fantasy where I buy a 1920s fixer-upper and bring it into fabulousness.

The Kids Are All-White

I was just flipping through Crate&Barrel’s spring catalog and see that they’ve been bitten by the all-white bug, like fashion designers Ralph Lauren, Narciso Rodriguez, Dolce & Gabbana, and Michael Kors.

From the runway:

I know that all-white living doesn’t make a lot of sense for families with small children—it just invites trouble. That’s why I love this image. The chairs look like they can be wiped clean. No white upholstery and no white rug means no big risk! Smart thinking, C&B:

This whole post reminds me of Sex and the City. I’ve only seen a handful of episodes, but a quote from one of them has had me giggling for years. “We’ve got an ass-on-white-couch situation!”

Coral Wall Paint

I spot a trend! And I must say, these pinks, oranges, and corals popping up everywhere are making me want to decorate.

Honeysuckle at Home

I’ve been, somewhat obsessively, thinking about Pantone’s selection for 2011 Color of the Year: Honeysuckle pink. I’m still not convinced that they chose the right color, but what’s amazing about Pantone is their far-reaching authority—undoubtedly as soon as they made the announcement last December, designers and manufacturers everywhere finalized their new product lines.

I looked at interior paint brands to see if anyone is making a pink that resembles Pantone’s Honeysuckle, and the closest contenders were Behr’s Watermelon Pink, Benjamin Moore’s Deco Rose, Sherwin-Williams’ Zany Pink, and Valspar’s First Kiss. I admit I’ve visualized Honeysuckle walls—and doors, lamps, sideboards—several times lately and feel pretty happy when I do.

I also found three wallpapers from Graham & Brown that are really close to Pantone’s Honeysuckle.

Hmm, realizing that I need about three-hundred apartments to apply all the color palettes in my head right now, I’m slightly bummed.

Spicy Mustard

Mustard yellow is hot right now. I’m seeing it so much that it’s infiltrating my dreams; every night I close my eyes to images of blooming marigolds and streaming spicy condiment. The obsession was getting so out of hand that I finally dragged my toddler to the bus stop and made the long ride to H&M to buy a mustard yellow cardigan. Whew!

So, of course, a lot of my inspiration these days is coming from mustard yellow. I can’t show you the projects I’m working on, but I can show you why this color is awakening my creativity.

And, because I can never resist creating a wedding inspiration board, this shows how glamorous mustard yellow can be when combined with black and white (somebody plan an early fall wedding, please!):
