The Lake House Renovation: Kitchen, Day 1

God help us. We weren’t planning on touching the kitchen for another 5-10 years, but the odor of the house continues to offend our senses.

Don’t let the quaint, solid-wood cabinets fool you. They fooled us, too. We thought we would keep them. In the end, we realized the only way to pinpoint the source of the odor was to start removing cabinets. This is the photo my husband texted to me before he got started this morning:

Today’s demolition resulted in removed cabinets and flooring, with layers of rot, trash, and dirt, built up over years. This is the pile of trash he found underneath the first set of cabinets he removed:

He had a suspicion that some of the smell was coming from the floor also, so he started pulling up three layers of vinyl flooring:
