Chrissy Teigen and John Legend’s Nolita Loft

Oh my, I love the drama! This is Chrissy Teigen and John Legend’s New York City apartment, completely customized by by Don Stewart of Desiderata Design and featured in Architectural Digest. Dark colors, rustic textures, and oversized proportions are front and center in this dramatic, but unexpectedly moody, design.

My absolute favorite part of this apartment is the kitchen. Everything, everything surprised me here, from the rhythmic cabinetry to the textured backsplash, and from the open shelving on the kitchen island to the flat geometric pendant lights. And those gold stools! They look like trumpet buttons in motion! This whole room is just perfectly musical. Plus, the departure from the all-white kitchen trend is so very refreshing. Take note, people.

Skinny Neckties at Chloé Pre-Fall 2015

Chloé presented one of my favorite pre-fall collections. I really want to replicate the skinny necktie look and just need to figure out how I am going to do it. With ribbon? Or sew my own? I only have a couple of blouses that this would work for, but I am determined.

A Chic, Mountain-Cabin Inspired Entryway

I was just reminiscing about the ‘90s, the era of my youth. Specifically, I was trying to remember textile design trends and decided that the most popular of the decade was probably plaid. Am I right? Grunge plaid, lumberjack plaid, camping plaid. Man, we were so much more rugged back then. (In contrast, 2015 feels so polished. It makes me want to grab 2015 and mess up her hair a little.)

And then I started thinking about how great plaid wallpaper could be. In the right space—perhaps something a little mountain-cabin inspired?—it would be so nostalgic. I could listen to Smashing Pumpkins’ Siamese Dream and Nirvana’s In Utero all day in a plaid wallpapered room, hopefully draped across something better than flattened beanbag chair.

What would be really great is a plaid entryway, to welcome guests into your home with a bold and fearless representation of your youth. Add a practical but rugged hall tree, a rounded ceiling pendant to contrast all the straight lines, textured pillows that are fabulously mismatched, and lastly, a gold-framed art piece to avoid going too far into mountain-cabin theme and keep things chicly grounded.

It’s enough to make me want to put on a pair of Doc Martens.

Teardrop Earrings

Bohemia always rises again in the fashion world, and to be perfectly honest, I wasn’t ready for its return this time around. I had been enjoying the mod, the minimalism, and the normcore of recent seasons; they felt fresh to me. For the new Bohemia, it felt too soon.

Then, last spring, I bought a pair of black flared jeans and a rust-colored peasant blouse and never wanted to take them off. I came around. Really came around. I have now spent the entire summer in sweeping, glamorous, printed maxi dresses and am already planning my Bohemian purchases for the fall.

And how to accessorize all of those new purchases? With a pair of teardrop earrings. Time to put away my minimalist studs and go all out with my Bohemian look. For fall 2015, my favorites are beaded.

Crestwood Kitchen in Blues and Aquas

Tobi Fairley is one of my favorite designers to watch. Her brazenly bold, feminine interiors are certainly not for everyone, but they almost always stir up giddy feelings in me. Even when I disagree with one of her design choices, I still want to roll around in them. Roll around, put my feet in the air, and giggle. I wonder how she would feel knowing she has that affect on people.

This very blue kitchen and family room she designed capitalizes on those giddiest of feelings, especially the feelings that are connected to my love of blue, which are connected to my love of anything that feels like an ocean, which this room certainly does. Cue rolling around and giggling.
